Reliance Jio Infocomm joins COAI, mends relationship
There was a time when Reliance Jio Infocomm and Cellular Operators Association of India shared an argumentative relationship. But this seems to be an old story as the telco has now joined the body and has become one of the core members of COAI. The autonomous body represents GSM telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Uninor and many others.
Talking about this move to PTI, Rajan Mathews director COAI said, “We are delighted that Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) has joined us in our common endeavour to roll out innovative and affordable mobile broadband services to the citizens of India.” On the other hand, Reliance Jio’s managing director; Sandip Das stated that, the company is delighted to be associated with COAI. We hope to develop an environment that will help us realise the demands of the Indian customers and the industry as well.
In the past COAI has taken a stand which was against Relaince Jio involving vaious issues. A war of words also started between the two relating to the issue issue of the Department of Telecom (DoT) issuing a unified licence to RJIL against payment of about Rs 1,673 crore in 2013. With unified licence, RJIL can offer full-fledged mobile services, a development vehemently opposed by COAI alleging the company was given licence at cheap price.
