Spearheading Open Source Developments

Open Source

NEW DELHI, INDIA: A report encapsulated, courtesy, the Standish Group (from 2008) reportedly states that – adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers. Open source software is actually software that can be freely used, changed and shared (in modified or unmodified form) by anyone sought to bring a higher profile to the practical benefits of freely available source code and required to bring major software businesses and other high-tech industries into open source.

Android reigns in the mobile segment

The writing on the wall reads that Linux, in the form of Android clearly rules the mobile market. While iOS falls second in line, it is yet to be seen who takes the third spot in the subsequent year. With Android also making a move towards the desktop, it won’t be too ambitious to say that Android may become the single most popular end-user operating system on all platforms.

Technocrats know about Google’s Linux-powered Chromebooks being popular. Dell, who did not have a Chromebook offering till now will be releasing its Chromebook in early 2014, that is. LG will also be rolling out a new Chrome OS dubbed Chromebase. It will be an all-in-one PC that will combine Chrome having 21.5-inch display with 1,920 x 1,080 full HD resolution.

Even Android is moving towards the desktop. There are emerging reports which suggest “PC Plus” machines are on their way. For the uninitiated, they are laptops that will come with both Windows 8.1 and Android.

Linux and cloud

While Users can still ensue debating about the rise of Linux on desktop, no one can argue on its influence in the cloud genre. Besides Microsoft’s Azure, all major cloud software platforms like Amazon’s EC2 cloud, followed by Google Compute Engine and the various OpenStack implementations are Linux and open source based. However, one can run Ubuntu, CentOS, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and openSUSE on Azure.
