DoT planning to issue a show cause notice to Airtel

DoT is planning to issue a show cause notice to Airtel as the telco has disguised caller identities for making promotional calls to the non-Airtel mobile subscribers. DoT is preparing to take a legal action against the operator for hiding the identity of the callers in the Madhya Pradesh circle in January 2011. The department feels that these kinds of actions pose a serious threat to security.

The Department of Telecommunications has also imposed a fine of Rs 50 crore on the operator back in October 2011. But in 2012, the penalty was removed by the telecom tribunal TDSAT sighting that the operator was not given any show cause notice prior to imposing the penalty so the order did not come under the principles of natural justice. The sources further reveal that there has been a delay in issuing this notice to Bharti Airtel. The division assigned with the task of issuing the notice is now taking legal advice to do the same.

However, the operator has declined to comment about anything in this matter. Earlier, Airtel said that the operator is not involved in this and the error is caused due to the actions of the third party call centre. However, DoT rejected the explanation saying that the call centre is not third party and it serves Airtel.
